I was totally unprepared for Wynwood. The Wynwood Walls, the Wynwood Doors, the Wynwood Street Art: this mecca of the walls and doors that comprise some of the best street art from the best artists around the world. https://thewynwoodwalls.com/walls.
Maybe unprepared was the way to discover it that Sunday afternoon I spent there with my son (and altogether great guy for taking me). I was a child, suddenly deposited, with no expectations, into a land of wonder. Do you know how it is to spend two, three hours (How long was it?) with the eye and body moving from one amazing creation to the next, unaware of time or the space you are in? Did we walk, did we float? At what point did I realize I was ignoring that I was hot, I was sticky and I was in dire need of a drink with lots of ice in it?
I was aware that morning, as I went from one work of street art to the next, that I was passing through the different sections of Wynwood. There were the Wynwood Walls, the Wynwood Doors, the Wynwood Gardens. And then the work referred to as Outside the Wynwood Walls. These sections represent the steps that were taken over a period of seven years (2009 to 2016). They converted a neighborhood of failed manufacturing, crime and abandoned warehouses into a vital community. Consequently, this is a community with the most fantastic, colorful outdoor museum! It represents the greatest street artists from the United States and around the world.
It’s a fun place to be, a festive atmosphere, great restaurants, shops and night life. But the real beauty of Wynwood is in the seeing. Rather than go on in long descriptions, I’ll give you several of the photographs I took while there. Finally, the beauty is in the seeing. If you visit Miami, do yourself a favor. Take yourself to Wynwood.
