Albuquerque….Los Poblanos Inn Farm Tour with Wes

The Friday Morning Farm Tour at Los Poblanos

In a stroke of serendipity I found myself on the Los Poblanos Inn farm tour.  For a long time I have been intrigued by the ads for Los Poblanos Inn and Restaurant. They appear every month in the Edible Magazine for Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Taos.  Los Poblanos is high on my list of restaurants where I’m dying to have a meal! Truthfully, I want to spend the night there, too, although I have a great bed and bedroom already at home. Albuquerque is only one hour and 15 minutes from home.  I planned, though, to visit the restaurant on one of my rare but necessary visits to Albuquerque.   It’s not that close that I would pop in on a lark for a meal. So a couple weeks ago I checked into their website to peruse the menu and make solid plans to visit.

My eyes were caught by the Events Calendar in the menu bar of the their website.  Every few weeks on a Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. you can meet up with Wes for the “Walks With Wes Farm Tour”.  So there I was, this past Friday morning at 9:00, in the reception room waiting to take off with Wes.  I was worried on the rush hour drive to Albuquerque that I might be the only one there, but not so.  I counted eighteen others, both inn guests and visitors, plus one little girl who came up no higher than my waist.  In an hour and a half we walked into the area of the herb gardens, down the dirt path that took us through the lavender fields and straight up to cross the long entrance road lined with cottonwoods.

On the other side were more blue skies and sunny fields with varieties of vegetables and a green house.  We continued along the paths that took us to the original Territorial buildings surrounded by their own flower gardens and fruit trees.  They also have architectural tours of these old, very beautiful buildings in bucolic settings.  (That will be for a later date.)  We came full circle onto the original farm buildings and the farm store.

So it was fun, altogether  laid back.  Wes was great, answered all questions and added a lot more information.  Everyone there seemed to be as happy as I was.

Lots of sunflowers to attract the necessary bees:

Lavender fields:

Green houses:

Fig trees among the buildings:

Lotus leaves:  the possibility that would be good for stuffing.  Kitchen is not sure yet if they are edible.  Wes said they sometimes try out different fruits and veggies for long times until they come up with something terrific.  They’re experimenting now with these lovely ju ju bees.  I don’t know if I have ever had a fresh and had my eye on this tree:

One of the old farm buildings:

The Farm Shop, with among other things, great lavender products:

And full swing back to Reception for guests.  There is one thing I didn’t do.  So don’t be surprised if you find a post entirely dedicated to the restaurant.  I am definitely going back for another laid back morning, this time with breakfast.
